Episode 44 Full Recap (Spoilers)

Spoiler warning: this recap covers the whole episode.

Xiao Yan saves Xiao Li and Fan Lao falls

The episode opens with the aftermath of Fan Lao's attack on the Xiao family. Xiao Yan arrives just in time to save Xiao Li, and the news that Xiao Yan is still alive gives the Xiao family hope. Fan Lao is burned by the Heavenly Flames, and with his death his grudge against Xiao Yan disappears. The grudge between Xiao Yan and Han Feng, however, is far from over. Xiao Li thanks the Great Elder for the academy's protection while the two groups prepare to march on Feng City.

The Great Elder sets out to break the Black League

Two years earlier, Jianan Academy suffered a humiliating disaster at the hands of outsiders. The academy has kept attacking since then, but Han Feng, hiding behind his title as the Medicine Emperor, has kept the Black League together across the Black Corner Domain. The Great Elder says the academy will only be free of its grudges once the league is overthrown and Han Feng is punished. Feng City is the league's headquarters, and the academy's force marches there to end the alliance.

The Black League braces for Xiao Yan's return

On the Black League side, the news spreads that the boy Xiao Yan, who is supposed to be dead, is still alive. The league's leaders say they have already sent people to track his whereabouts, and they decide not to wait for confirmation before acting. One leader says he wants Xiao Yan's Complete Burning Spell, because it would make him the strongest fighter on the continent. The league prepares for a battle it expects to be fought in its own city.

Han Feng and Xiao Yan trade words over the Burning Spell

In Feng City, the Great Elder faces Jin Yin alone and asks Xiao Yan to keep Han Feng busy until the duel is decided. Xiao Yan agrees to hold Han Feng off, but he will not kill him. The two men argue about the Burning Spell, and Han Feng accuses Xiao Yan of betraying the teacher who treated him like a son. Han Feng offers to hand over the Black League in exchange for the full Burning Spell. Xiao Yan refuses, and the exchange turns into a threat.

Xiao Yan fuses flames and Han Feng is pushed back

Xiao Yan uses the Burning Spell to fuse two Heavenly Flames, and the Sea Heart Flame separates from the rest. Han Feng is surprised that Xiao Yan has almost reached the Dou Zong level, and he tries to answer with his own fire techniques, including Brilliant Stamp and Fire Eater. The fight swings toward Xiao Yan, and by the end Han Feng is on the back foot, with Xiao Yan mocking him for suffering the same kind of loss twice. The episode closes before the battle is settled.
