The Alchemy Ranks and Xiao Yan's Grandmaster Title

The contest opens with a lesson on alchemist levels, which run through nine ranks, with the ninth-grade alchemy master at the top. Pills are classified into tiers such as Baodan and Xuan Dan, and the Master of the Golden Potion has not been seen for a thousand years. Xiao Yan is already a Precious Pill Grandmaster, and an elder calls him the youngest Grandmaster of the Elixir of Precious Pills. Elder Wanhuo then asks the contestants to show the Medicine Clan their alchemy skills.

Flames of Life, Void and Pure Lotus

Yao Xingji's Nine Nether Wind Flame, ranked tenth on the Strange Flame List, was lent to him by Elder Wanhuo. Shennong's Flame of Life, a level five flame known as the Fire of Longevity, helps herbs grow and extends life. The Void Devouring Flame, ranked second on the list, comes next in the showcase. Someone recalls that Xiao Yan once subdued the legendary Pure Lotus Demon Fire, which makes his flame the one to watch.

Four Contestants and the Race for Energy

The four contestants finish perfecting more than a thousand medicinal herbs, then move to core condensation for a ninth-grade Xuan Dan. The Four Mysterious Pill Arrays on this medicine mountain draw energy from the area, and the energy of heaven and earth within a thousand-mile radius is absorbed. The race becomes a question of who can gather more energy, and the spiritual power of every contestant runs thin. Talk of surrender spreads among the four, and some suggest saving the First Alchemist title for the next pharmacopoeia.

Hun Xuzi Tries to Steal the Energy

Hun Xuzi is accused of trying to steal energy from the other contestants, and the Hun Clan is called despicable for it. He then tries to stop the Void Devouring Flame, but the Pure Lotus flame completely purifies it. Hun Xuzi also disrupts the efficacy of a newly born medicinal potion, sabotaging one contestant's work. Xiao Yan's flame is said to refine different medicinal properties into the purest energy, which is why only he can still bet on the Xuan Dan.

A Ninth-Grade Mystic Pill Survives the Thunder

A thundercloud gathers as the pill nears completion, and a ninth-grade Xuan Dan must survive the thunderstorm tribulation. Nobody may intercept the lightning pill, because only the ninth grade is considered truly formed. The pill passes the tribulation and is identified as a Ninth Grade Mystic Pill. The pharmacopoeia credits Xiao Yan of the Heavenly Mansion Alliance with refining and developing it, and he is named the Number One Alchemist on the Continent. Xiao Yan then asks the Head of the Medicine Clan about the clan monument, and the answer is simply that the decision is up to him.
