Episode 148 Full Recap (Spoilers)

Spoiler warning: this recap covers the whole episode.

The Eight Primordial Clans and the Fading Xiao Bloodline

The episode opens with an invitation to Xiao Yan from the Gu clan, which is hosting a rare gathering of the ancient clans. The primordial clans are the Hun, Gu, Yao, Yan, Shi, Ling, Lei, and Xiao families, all of which once produced Dou Di bloodlines. The Xiao family's Dou Di bloodline has thinned over time, and by the time of his ancestor Xiao Xuan it was nearly gone. Xiao Yan says he does not regret the hardship, because the people who helped him along the way matter more to him.

The Gu Ancestor's Hostile Welcome

Xiao Yan returns to the Gu clan's grounds, and the Gu ancestor treats him with open hostility, saying that anyone who comes to his territory without permission is looking to die. A Gu clan commander moves to seize the visitors as suspicious, and the confrontation becomes a clash of soul attacks. A senior Gu clan official then steps in, reasoning that anyone who passed the barrier must be a guest invited by the Gu clan.

Entering the Ancient Holy City

Xiao Yan is cleared to enter the Gu clan's ancient holy city, and he is told to wait there for several days before the journey to the ancient realm. A Gu clan official invites him to test his strength against a young challenger, and Xiao Yan accepts. The city's officials promise an orderly welcome, but they also make clear that the Gu clan's young heiress has stirred up rivals who resent him.

The Black Flame Army Sets the Challenge

Information about the Black Flame army shows how selective its recruitment is. Candidates must reach a certain age and defeat a Dou Zun-level opponent to qualify, and the army has eight commanders, four great commanders, and two Yan kings. The eight commanders are not much of a threat to Xiao Yan, but the four great commanders and the two Black Smoke kings are. Commander Yang Hao steps forward to challenge Xiao Yan for the champion's title, and the episode ends as Xiao Yan is invited to accept.
